Hamilton Island, one of the Iconic Tropical Holiday Destination on the Great Barrier Reef, Reportedly Set to be Sold by American Private Equity Firm.
A major tropical holiday destination located within the Great Barrier Reef has reportedly been sold to a US-based investment group in a deal said to be worth A$1.2 billion.
“It is an honor to continue the vision and dedication of the Oatley family has established in the center of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” stated a senior representative.
Details of the Sale
The New York-headquartered, the investment firm Blackstone – which also owns the hospitality group Crown Resorts – announced it had signed an deal to purchase the island resort from the Oatley family, pending standard approvals from regulators.
The family issued a comment noting they welcomed the change in ownership of an island that holds a “unique position in the hearts of countless Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
The Island's Size and Amenities
Located roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, Hamilton covers more than 1,130 hectares across two islands.
Approximately thirty percent of the area is built upon, including a significant array of facilities:
- Five hotels
- More than 20 dining and drinking venues
- 20 retail outlets
- An 18-hole championship golf course on neighboring Dent Island
- A marina and a commercial airport
The resort is described as a significant employer in the Whitsunday region, supporting a sizable resident community and staff, as well as a broad network of regional partners, vendors, and local businesses.
Historical Context at Ownership
The late billionaire Robert Oatley, a well-known sailor and vintner, originally purchased the resort for $200 million in the year 2003 after spying the island from aboard a yacht during a voyage through the Whitsunday passage.
The island's development boom initially started in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was characterized by simple iron huts and modest accommodations that housed Australian vacationers from the outback and southern states.

Blackstone has ownership of hotels and luxury resorts in multiple countries, such as Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro Indigenous people. Its name comes from Captain James Cook, who navigated the Endeavour through the island group on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
