Edwards along with Gary O'Neil are two of the initial names under consideration to succeed Vitor Pereira as head coach of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The previous coach was dismissed on the weekend after the team's 10-match winless beginning to the Premier League season.
And both candidates - both of who have historic associations to the team - are part of the options to be considered by the club ownership.
Edwards is currently at Middlesbrough, which would pose a possible obstacle to his hiring at Molineux.
However the ex- Luton Town head coach - who played more than 100 of games for Wolves during his time as a player - is considered a leading candidate for the position.
The mid-career manager is reportedly enjoys backing from the Wolves directors as they begin the search of hiring a new manager.
Gary O'Neil is also emerging as a surprise contender, although he would be a surprising choice considering he was released by Wolves in the previous winter.
The ex- West Ham United midfielder is currently unemployed meaning the club would not need to pay any buyout fee.
